You may not have been navigating among icebergs but you may well have been facing a situation where an exchange student’s behaviour puzzled you, and you were only able to see the tip of the iceberg but had no idea what was under the surface- even though you sensed that there was something. Aims of the training: • Come to a common understanding of what we mean when we talk about culture. • Accept, respect and value our differences. • Recognize that our cultural differences influence how we communicate with each other and with the students and families we are responsible for. • Identify how we can effectively communicate across cultures despite the differences that seem to divide us. After having participated in the Training on Intercultural Communication you will: • Have a better understanding of differences between cultures when you are handling support issues. • Be better prepared to address habits and attitudes rooted in customs and traditions that date back hundreds of years. • See the bigger picture and not just the details. • Be a more competent YFU guide and volunteer. • Benefit from the training in your professional as well your private life. • Be a wiser citizen. The training is offered to: Experienced support volunteers - Key volunteers involved with training of volunteers – Key volunteers involved with student orientations. The training will consist of presentations and cases. Trainer: David Bachner, American University, Washington, D.C. David Bachner is Scholar-in-Residence in the International Communication program of the School of International Service, where he also serves as Chairman of the Advisory Council for the Intercultural Management Institute. Between 1982 and 1994, David served YFU, Inc. successively as Director of Asia/Pacific Programs, Director of Educational & Program Services, Vice President, and founding Director of the International Secretariat. He has been a YFU Area Representative, Host Father, and father of an AO to Switzerland. David is currently Chairman of the YFU International Advisory Council and a Trustee of YFU USA, Inc. David spent 1964-65 as an exchange student at International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan. After graduation from college in 1966 he served in Korea with the first group of U.S. Peace Corps volunteers to Korea.
